The Tomahawk at Legends.

At Legends, a Chicago-style steak house that opened next door to Aurum at the start of the last ski season, you almost expect to see Al Capone tucking into the $99 Tomahawk Chop, a Flintstone-size 38-ounce bone-in rib eye that's almost a dare on the menu.

“Several people have finished it,” General Manager Kris Kumar says of the Chop. “I’ve seen a couple of them do it pretty leisurely.”

Legends took over the space once occupied by Southridge Seafood Grill, which moved two blocks south to La Cima Mall. A new glass wine wall helps separate the buzzing bar area from the dining section, and proprietor Alan Bullock, who was born and raised on the Windy City's north side, also added a 12-room private dining room downstairs. legendsbreckenridge.com

A similar-in-scope renovation preceded Artisan 206’s opening last November in the spacious former home of the Red Orchid Chinese restaurant on North Main Street. Critically acclaimed chef Samir Mohammad, who made his name at the Village Cork and Black Pearl in Denver, brought to the mountains a menu of comfort food unto itself. Small plates include a Spanish potato omelet, salmon tartare with caramelized onion and mango chutney, and a grilled peach salad. The entrées are reasonably priced and hearty, highlighted by the English-style fish-and-chips—a full rock fish served with caper remoulade and house-made fries for $19—and the spicy lamb tikka masala fajita for $22. If you still have room for dessert, try the savory Catalonian Cream: a cinnamon cookie served with crème brûlée. artisan206.com
