A line of people stretches down Main Street Breckenridge, everyone bundled up against the chill: cozy coats, hats, scarves covering most of their faces. But they’re not chittering, they’re chatting, sharing laughs and good cheer even as they queue in the cold. The reason? They’re not waiting for admission to a big show or even to ride a chairlift; they’re about to savor some hot, delicious food, made fresh to order right in the middle of town at one of three popular food carts.

Crêpes à la Cart occupies a charming wooden cart painted in bright colors and strung with twinkly lights. The cart itself, dating back at least 30 years, is a fixture of the historic downtown, and it’s hardly a roll-away operation: a neighboring deck provides seating around an outdoor fireplace. Cart patrons feast on satisfying sweet or savory crêpes with classic fillings such as brie, fruit, cream, chocolate, and an array of vegetables, other cheeses, and meats.

Just across the street in the courtyard of The Shops at Old South Main, “Breck’s Wurst Stand”—also known as Summit Dogs—serves imported German sausages (and veggie dogs!) with crispy grilled peppers and onions. You may opt to try a hot dog made with Colorado buffalo meat instead. The best part is that menu items start at only $2.

For a warm and sugary treat, head one block north to BeaverTails on the west side of Main between Washington and Lincoln. Take a seat at the log bar with log benches (crafted by beavers, presumably), and gnaw off a bite of the house specialty. In case you haven’t had one, a beaver tail is a whole-wheat fried pastry shaped like (you guessed it) a beaver’s tail.

These carts’ recent ascendance has brought quick, convenient cooking out of Breck’s cafeterias and into the open. They’re a great new outlet for active locals and visitors who prefer to remain on the go.
